Swords for Hire: Malifaux Viktorias Crew

From the fires of destruction an old foe rises to sow terror and despair. That's right! Lord Manton is back from the wilderness to show off a recently completed project: Viktorias Crew; Malifaux 2nd Edition.

All is Dust: In Defence of the Thousand Sons

Thousand Sons rubric marines cop a lot of flak in the online community. Today I want to try to convince you that they're awesome and that you should always take them. Even if you don't play Chaos.

Get Yo' Apocalypse Outta My 40K! And A Helbrute

You may have noticed lately that there has been quite the discussion going on in our little corner of the internet: Balance in 40K. A lot of opinions have gone back and forth and a few nasty things have been said. It's really been quite fun to watch and occasionally get involved. Here are my thoughts on the matter.

Dark Mechanicus: A New Project

As of this weekend, Games Workshop has put the first units for Cult Mechanicus up for pre-order. There are a few pictures of the coming releases floating around the web and if you haven't seen them, I recommend you hunt them down.

These new releases (and this month's Blanchitsu in Warhammer: Visions) have got the creative juices flowing and I've spent the past weekend getting my mad scientist on. There's a bit of a twist though, I'm going Dark Mech. The Dark Mechanicum has always been one of the more compelling factions for me in 40k, and the new Ad-Mech models means I can finally get an army going without having to stretch my limited modelling skills.

Basement or Store: The State of Our Game

Alright folks, today we've got another Editorial on our hands, but this time with a little less rant. I want to know what environment you play in. Do you play in a store, in tournaments, or in your shed with your buddies?

X-Wing Battle Report

What's that? You sense a disturbance in the force? Could it be that great, big, hulking Decimator flying right at us?!

DIY Rules for 40k: Editorial Rant

Alright, engage rant.

I am so fricking sick of hearing people trot out the same crap. You can't go a day without someone bitching about how X army is broken or Y army hasn't been updated in years or the whole game is completely useless and not playable (though the fact that the vast majority of gamers play this game would suggest it is). It's not balanced, it doesn't match the fluff, it's not designed for tournaments, there aren't enough FAQs, it's not play-tested or it's not realistic.

Location, Location: How To Terrain

Oh, hello. I didn't see you there.

A couple of posts ago, I talked about the shooting phase and how it is perceived as OP. One of the things I touched on was terrain, and how it can be an important part of the wargaming experience. Well, today I want to look at that idea in a little more detail, as well as hopefully give you a couple of ideas for your own terrain collection.

Staying Motivated... Ugh

Hey there, filthy corpse worshippers. Today I want to talk about the age-old problem of waining hobby motivation and the scourge of hobby ADD.

Case in point

I've been playing Warhammer 40k since 1999. That's a whopping sixteen years! How many completely painted armies do I have to show for it? One. 1. Uno. That would be my Chaos Space Marine army. My Iron Warriors. And that army isn't even valid any more. My main army, the one I love and hold dear to my heart is my Space Wolf Great Company. Even there, I don't have a painted, legal army (<-- You can check out what I have painted in the Gallery). On top of this, I have a Chaos Troll army in the works, as well as a metric shit-load of unpainted, unglued, High Elves, not to mention other games and projects that just won't ever see completion.

Close Combat and You: Fist-Fighting in the Far Future

With a crash and a rumble the Berzerker flipped the table, sending mugs of Blood-Ale flying across the room.

"What a load of crap! How the hell am I supposed to see any fights now that shooting is so damned powerful!? Curse you Khorne! I'm off to become a Plague Marine."

Lord Manton here and today I want to ask whether shooting really is OP; and if it is, is that such a bad thing?

Revenge is Sweet: A Narrative Battle Report

The small boat was lucky to still be afloat; a vicious storm had pummelled the island for the past week, but the news the crew carried was too urgent to wait for the tempest to abate. Scarcely had the boat been lashed to the jetty before the Sea Helm was making his way up the steps carved into the cliff face, up to the outpost's entrance.

On The Desk: Painting Gems and Elf Hair

Last time in "On the Desk" we painted up a Bolt Thrower crew member, but we only really looked at the basics. I showed you how to paint up the main parts of a High Elf. This time, I want to go into some of the more technical aspects of painting elves: gems and hair.

Ch-ch-ch-changes: Warhammer Fantasy Rumours

Hello, noble wardens of miniature justice!

I'll smash ya!

I know I promised a tutorial on Elven detailing, but as you can see, I've been a wee bit distracted of late... Rest assured, though; that article is still on it's way.

Today, however, I want to talk about a bit of breaking news (rumours) from the Web. Basically Warhammer Fantasy is due for an update to its 9th edition. Before we get into it, if you haven't already, head over to Faeit212 and have a look at the rumours as they are written. You've always got to take rumours with a grain of salt and remember that quite often rumours are a combination of wishlisting and misinformation. But when Harry over on Warseer says something, it usually pays to listen. He has a pretty solid track record with what's on the cards.
